Windshield head-up display

Head-up displays (HUDs) are no longer exclusive to fighter jets; once a high-tech feature reserved for luxury vehicles, HUDs are now gradually becoming more accessible to the general public. For example, the following are HUDs from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, which project a wealth of colorful digital information onto the windshield.

1. Advantages of the HUD

(1) The HUD information display is positioned higher than the traditional instrument cluster. In other words, when a driver wants to check vehicle information, they only need to lower their head by 5–10° when using the HUD, whereas looking at the instrument cluster requires lowering the head by 20–25°.

(2) When the driver checks the driving information on the instrument cluster, their gaze shifts from the road to the instrument cluster and back to the road. Due to the high brightness of the road and the lower brightness inside the vehicle, the eyes undergo a transition from bright to dark and then back to bright, causing the pupils to adjust; at the same time, the focal point of the eyes shifts from far to near and then back to far. When the driver views information on the HUD, their eyes don’t have to strain as much.

2; Windshield

What’s so special about the windshield? The diagram on the upper left shows the typical laminated structure of a windshield. If the HUD image is projected onto a standard windshield, it easily causes image ghosting, resulting in poor projection quality.

Meanwhile, the PVB interlayer within the windshield’s laminated glass is wedge-shaped, meaning the glass is thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom, which prevents image doubling.

As can also be seen here, to reduce costs, most A- and B‑class vehicles equipped with a head‑up display (HUD) system are additionally fitted with a reflective glass panel. Meanwhile, on most luxury brands, where cost constraints are less stringent, they tend to use a head-up display projected onto the windshield.
